Perimeter Print E-mail
The Perimeter is the point at which your company's Network connects with the Internet. It usually consists of your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) router, Firewalls, Intrusion Protection/Detection Servers and Proxy Servers.

Your ISP's router is the device that provides internet access to the location you do business in. Whether you have a T1, Cable or DSL, chances are that you have some sort of device that connects you directly to the Internet via your ISP. You don't have much control over this device. Control of it belongs to your ISP, so the focus really begins with your Firewall.

Your Firewall is where you gain control over your Internet connection. This device allows you to control what comes into your Network and what does not. It also allows you to control what flows out of your network and what does not. This is the most important part of your network. Operating without a robust Firewall is similar to leaving the front door to your business unlocked and wide open.

Intrusion Detection/Prevention Servers (IDS/IPS) offer detection and prevent of malicious activity on your Network that did not come through the Firewall. An example of this can include a laptop that may have picked up a virus on a different network that yours. Once that laptop connects to your network, the virus can permeate the Network from the inside out. An IDS/IPS implementation detect and prevent this virus from spreading to other devices on your Network.

A Proxy Server allows you to control where your users visit on the Internet. This can protect you by not allowing your users to visit web sites that are known to house malware infected downloads. It also allows you to enhance productivity by only allowing your users to visit work related web content.
